Scenario
When an 8-year-old girl disappears at Caddo Lake, a series of previous deaths and disappearances begin to connect, changing the story of a fractured family. There’s a scene where Anna’s mom says it’s in Marshall County, then says it’s in Harrison County. Marshall is the county seat of Harrison County, Texas. But the way they do it is quite impressive
Once you get the gist of what’s going on, the story itself isn’t groundbreaking. I don’t think people appreciate enough the amount of coordination that goes into setting the pace and tone of any film, especially when you throw in special effects and potentially time-of-day lighting. This film does it all flawlessly and creates an almost tangible momentum that carries you through the entire film. While I wasn’t surprised it ended when it did, I never once looked for it or thought about it until it did.
Dylan O’Brien is something special
That’s usually a sure sign of storytelling competence. The final scene felt a little empty, though, for reasons I can’t quite explain. Maybe a clearer angle of Celeste’s final, knowing look would have fixed that problem, but that’s just a thought, not a genuine criticism. The acting was spot on for everyone involved.
I’ve seen his work before, but this really allowed him to shine
Lauren Ambrose also totally sells the manic/troubled persona and just becomes that person. Eliza Scanlen never once failed to sell me on what was happening on screen. Talents like that make it so much easier to get lost in what’s being shown, and that’s always appreciated. Great movie.
